Understanding & Addressing Loneliness Inequalities

Members of the TLC Board were invited to attend a lecture at Nottingham Trent University (NTU) given by Professor Manuela Barreto from the University of Exeter at the end of March.

The theme was ‘Understanding & Addressing Loneliness Inequalities’

Arguably the world expert on loneliness, Manuela Barreto talks about socialization and why ‘people need people’. Manuela Barreto is the professor of Social and Organisational Psychology at the University of Exeter. Professor Barreto discusses her research on loneliness, challenging common narratives, and emphasizing social and structural causes over individual factors. She highlights the impact of stigma, prejudice and discrimination on loneliness, especially among marginalized groups.

She is also the author of the landmark study “Loneliness around the world: Age, gender, and cultural differences in loneliness.” Further information is available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrnRHQ5ORJs
