Researchers at Nottingham Trent University are collaborating with the TLC to lead an evaluation of the Friendly Connector programme in Leamington. We aim to address loneliness by helping communities to feel more connected, and to improve access to support services.

Loneliness is increasingly recognised as a major public health issue, with serious impacts on people’s mental and physical wellbeing. In areas like Ashfield in Nottinghamshire, where there are higher levels of economic hardship and social challenges, people may face additional barriers to connecting with others or accessing support. This project recognises that traditional services do not always reach those who need them most.

The Friendly Connector approach offers a different way forward. It supports trusted members of the local community to act as informal connectors. These “friendly connectors” are trained to spot the signs of loneliness, and signpost others to the TLC website. The idea is simple but powerful: communities themselves can play a key role in reducing loneliness when they are supported to do so effectively.
The NTU evaluation will use interviews and surveys to explore whether the programme can genuinely improve people’s sense of belonging and wellbeing, and importantly, why and how it works. A key part of the work is identifying the “ingredients” that make community connection initiatives successful. This includes understanding what motivates people to become Friendly Connectors, how local identity and belonging influence outcomes, and what barriers might prevent people from taking part or benefiting fully. Ultimately, the goal of this research is to create a clear and practical roadmap for expanding this approach more widely across Nottinghamshire and potentially beyond, ensuring that more communities can benefit from stronger social connections and reduced loneliness.
